From Niger, Etran Finatawa. Like the band Tinariwen, they play the style of music known as “desert blues,” referring to the guitar band style coming out of the Sahara Desert region of Africa.

Judy Henske, from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The queen of the beatniks. One of my favorite thriller-writers, Andrew Vachss, the protagonist in most of his books, Burke, often listened to Judy Henske tapes as he drove around New York. One day I decided to look for her name on the internet, and I found this great song. I found one of my very favorite writers, Joe R Lansdale, the same way, he was often mentioned in Vachss’s books, too.

Genesis will be remembered as the prog rock band they were until the singer quit, and the guitar player quit. Their later fame as a stadium-filler art-pop/AOR band will be forgotten. This is probably the song they’ll be most remembered for, “The Musical Box” from 1971.

Ash Ra Tempel, famous krautrock band. On their 1973 album, one of the members had his girlfriend Rosi sing.

PiL’s “Poptones” from their Metal Box album, 1979 Virgin Records. I read John Lydon’s autobiography, oh at least 5 years ago. I remember he’d keep the rats out of his father’s crane. Like his dad was one of the best London crane operators, but there were rats that climbed up these cranes, and John would be waiting with a cricket bat.

Antony and the Johnsons (“Hope There’s Someone”). Here I am in the middle of the night, having broken up with my woman, Michelle, probably for the last time. Of all the mix cd’s I made her in our 4 months, by far she loved Antony the best. He’s one of my very favorite writer/performers of today. All his songs are good, many are awesome. This is my personal fave, although Michelle preferred “For Today I Am A Boy.”

1970’s German progressive rock, “Krautrock.” Being an indie fan I can appreciate how the Germans invented many of the music styles later used by Eno, Bowie and many many punk bands, many pop bands of all kinds. “Progarchives.com” is a great place to hear free Krautrock and lot’s of prog rock styles. This band here, Popol Vuh, I first heard while watching Werner Herzog’s film “Aguirre.” That film, and the music in it, is a powerful experience and I recommend it as highly as I possibly can. This band is too wonderful to put into words. “Letzte Tage – Letzte Nachte (Last Days – Last Nights)” from 1976, is possibly my favorite song of theirs, featuring Florian Fricke (piano) and Daniel Fichelscher (guitar & drums) with Djong Yun and Renate Knaup singing. Other good songs you can hear on YouTube include “Einsjager & Siebenjager,” “Wurfelspiel,” “Hosianna-Mantra,” “Brothers of Darkness, Sons of Light” and “Aguirre.”
